Hey, Tumblr SJ…

If you want to seek this “social justice”, then here’s what you do…

  • You stop blaming “cis white men” “as a whole” for all your problems, and acknowledge that they might have some problems of their own.
  • You thicken your skin, and stop feeling marginalized by everything.
  • You acknowledge the fact that, if you don’t want to be racist, you can’t say, “people of race ‘x’ can’t do action ‘y’, because of race ‘x’” even if “‘x’ equals White/Caucasian/Anglo-Saxon”/etc.
  • You acknowledge the fact that, if you don’t want to be sexist, you can’t say, “people of sex ‘x’ can’t do action ‘y’, because of sex ‘x’” even if “‘x’ equals male”.
  • Also, stop saying, “you can’t be ____ist to straight white men.” You discriminate when you say this, and you invalidate your entire position.
  • And for fuck’s sake, stop saying it’s acceptable to use terms like slut and nigger if you happen to be a womyn or Afro-American. Shit that is unacceptable is unacceptable regardless of who spits it out. Real justice starts when that is realized…

If I think of any more, I’ll add them to the hate mail I will guaranteedly receive. Bottom line is that until you all start fighting for EVERYONE’S justice, and not just those that fit niche groups that you feel “need it”, you don’t blog justice. You want to be unjust? Your first step is picking which inherent characteristics make one undeserving of your help. If you realize one thing from reading of all the problems you read of, you should quickly realize that everyone could use a little help now and then, even if they’re white, male, and/or straight — and that sometimes, their opposition comes as a mirror of these things. Just one last thing. Justice applies to everyone, not just your pet projects, and if more of you respected that, more people like me would like more people like you; if you want justified enemies instead of justified allies, keep doing what you’re doing — seems to be working out great for you.

In Liberty, and REAL justice,

So…

velocicrafter:

insanityisfree:

lezzbfriends:

One of my co workers is going to a “Cowboys and Indians” party. I am disgusted for a number of reasons.

A) Why can’t it just be a Western themed party?

B) It encourages exoticism, Not just that, the girls are to be the “Indians”.

C)This is clearly a play of gender power roles, suggesting that Natives are effeminate and elaborating the exoticism.

D) The term “Indians”?!? Seriously?! That is what Columbus called  us because being the imbecile he was though he had found India. I mean damn.

E) Blatant Cultural Appropriation.

The worst part is, this is a High School sponsored event.

We are not a party them, we are not weak, we are not just some exotic costume.

A) Why should it be?

B) Okay, don’t participate. It’s a right a school can’t even deny you.

C) Okay. How would you handle it? Would you downplay the things extracultural to anglo-saxons? Or what. Give me ideas. How homogenized do you want this to be?

D) Many Native Americans call themselves “Indian”. Gonna deny them their culture? Treading the line of hypocrisy there.

E) Wear jeans? Once typically associated with male work of gold mining, designed to be rigid and durable, with pockets for findings, they were long held to be the garb of the working man. Are you genderally appropriating, or just wearing what you want out of the absurd notion that you own yourself?

And what about rappers wearing crosses while discussing the many ways to “fuck a bitch”? Gonna stand up for Catholics, too, or is that too much?

Or, how about piercings in general. They were once cultural to a single tribe, and now they’re in malls. How terrible. I bet you feel sick walking into Claire’s.

I think you might find that every aspect of any society on Earth is “culturally appropriated”. When do people start to own themselves enough to wear what they want before you become offended? Seriously. I’m curious. Because it sounds like you’re saying that, because of my skin color, I should be barred.

Which has a word.

Racism.

Regards,

IIF

Oh, IIF…

A) Why should it be?

You respond as though you read the rest of OP’s post, yet apparently you missed points B (particularly “It encourages exoticism”) and E.

It seems like you don’t understand what cultural appropriation actually is. It’s more than just “borrowing from another culture”, as you suggest, it’s taking aspects of that culture that have specific meaning & using them in a way that is inconsistent with this meaning—regardless of how intentional this misuse is. Simply put: arguing against cultural appropriation isn’t saying “don’t engage in other cultures”, it’s saying, “engage in other cultures respectfully”.

More than that, “Cowboys & Indians” costume theme events only encourage people to dress in & perpetuate racist stereotypes about Native Americans—a whitewashed, homogenized caricature of literally hundreds of different cultural groups that are lumped into the umbrella term “Native American/Indian” (hint: this is the part where you try to argue that there’s nothing wrong w/racist stereotypes & attempt to do so w/o outing yourself as a racist (or maybe you’re not shy about this, I don’t know)! Good luck)

The idea that the Natives in this sense are being called “Indians” doesn’t bother me, since I know that many people who are indigenous to what is now called “The Americas” have taken on this term as a way to self-identify. We can talk about how problematic it was for Columbus to use this term, but it’s important to respect the identities of people today who ID this way.

Finally, IIF, it is not an act of racism to tell white people that they’re not allowed to perpetuate racism, engage in racist stereotyping, or to actively disrespect other cultures. Maybe next time your “reverse-racist!” card will serve you better, but I doubt it, since “reverse-oppression” is not a thing.

“You respond as though you read the rest of OP’s post, yet apparently you missed points B (particularly “It encourages exoticism”) and E. ”

Which is why I retorted to every point. That makes sense.

“It seems like you don’t understand what cultural appropriation actually is. It’s more than just ‘borrowing from another culture’, as you suggest, it’s taking aspects of that culture that have specific meaning & using them in a way that is inconsistent with this meaning—regardless of how intentional this misuse is. Simply put: arguing against cultural appropriation isn’t saying ‘don’t engage in other cultures’, it’s saying, ‘engage in other cultures respectfully’. ”

First, the only semi-concrete definition of CA:

Definition for cultural appropriation:

Cultural appropriation is the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group. It describes acculturation or assimilation, but can imply a negative view towards acculturation from a minority culture by a dominant culture. ….  More »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_appropriation

…So you’re wrong. Second, I shouldn’t have to respect jack shit to wear what I want — especially not on the basis of skin colour. Deal with it.

“More than that, ‘Cowboys & Indians’ costume theme events only encourage people to dress in & perpetuate racist stereotypes about Native Americans—a whitewashed, homogenized caricature of literally hundreds of different cultural groups that are lumped into the umbrella term ‘Native American/Indian’ (hint: this is the part where you try to argue that there’s nothing wrong w/racist stereotypes & attempt to do so w/o outing yourself as a racist (or maybe you’re not shy about this, I don’t know)! Good luck)”

Nope. You’re right here. If, of course, you wish to avoid hypocrisy, you might consider revising your use of the word “White” especially in reference to “privilege”. For instance. I’m:

  • American — of course
  • Irish (NDIA)*
  • Scottish (Kilt fag)*
  • British (Redcoat/Lobsterback)*
  • French (Either pompous, or just pussy, depending on who you talk to)*
  • German (Some say all NAZIs, so…)*
  • Canadian (Just watch South Park)*
  • several others not at mind currently…
  • [* are just a few stereotypes associative objects so called “privileged people” have placed on my ancestoral race(s)]

… in origin. So don’t “homogenize” me by simply calling me “white”. I wish, henceforth, to be referred to as iriscottrenchermanadiabriterican. You mustn’t disrespect that, now, or SJ will hunt you down (I’m now being told they won’t, I guess I’ll have to stick with plain old homogeneous white).

“The idea that the Natives in this sense are being called “Indians” doesn’t bother me, since I know that many people who are indigenous to what is now called “The Americas” have taken on this term as a way to self-identify. We can talk about how problematic it was for Columbus to use this term, but it’s important to respect the identities of people today who ID this way.”

Okay, cool. That’s out of the way… wait, WHAT? A moment ago, you said:

“More than that, ‘Cowboys & Indians’ costume theme events only encourage people to dress in & perpetuate racist stereotypes about Native Americans—a whitewashed, homogenized caricature of literally hundreds of different cultural groups that are lumped into the umbrella term ‘Native American/Indian’”

I don’t respect those who attempt to patronize me, and fall to hypocrisy in the process. Try again later.

“Finally, IIF, it is not an act of racism to tell white people that they’re not allowed to perpetuate racism, engage in racist stereotyping, or to actively disrespect other cultures. Maybe next time your ‘reverse-racist!’ card will serve you better, but I doubt it, since ‘reverse-oppression’ is not a thing.”

Maybe if you would stop using racism to perpetuate the use of the word “reverse”, you would realize how illogical this entire paragraph is. You only assume that because I’m white. If a “Native American” said the same thing, you would be unable to accuse them of the same thing. Scientifically, you’re fucked.

And again, remember, I’m not “white”, I’m iriscottrenchermanadiabriterican. Stop homogenizing me! You’re inappropriately appropriating my culture to affect righteousness, and remember, that’s disrespectful, and bad. Remember, apprentice appropriator, I’m not just

</sarcasm>

Have a nice day.

IIF

Well poisoning.

ourben:

Is black history month racist?

Yes.

By the way, nice quote cutting. Did you even read this shit? Refute the whole, or fuck the fuck off.

Yeah I read it. You obfuscated and whined about how you didn’t own slaves and your ancestors didn’t own slaves as if that makes it okay to marginalise the ancestors of slaves.

The world does not revolve around you.

Wanker.

Uh, no. I provided valuable contextual counterpoints that invalidated her “argument”.

No you didn’t. You leaped on “people of colour” to intentionally marginalise Americans of African American descent.

Every time I see you *criticise others with your *logic skills, you do the very thing you claim your *opponent is doing.

There is genuinely something wrong with the way you think. I’m not just saying this because you’re an arsehole, I’m saying it because it’s glaringly obvious to everybody else but you and your lonely sycophantic followers.

* lulz

You have not disproved anything. You have not made a point. Fuck. The fuck. Off.

You didn’t say anything to disprove. You projected weird insecurities and ignorance.

You think black history month is racist because:

  • You’re not black.
  • Morgan Freeman.

That’s why you think black history month is racist. Isn’t it?

You think celebrating while black is racist. Yet you think telling black people what triumphs they can and cannot celebrate isn’t racist?

Hilarious, in a tragic sort of way…

Black communities will decide when they are bored with black history month. LGBT communities will decide when they are bored with pride parades.

Not you.

I realise it’s hard to understand. I couldn’t understand it for years.

…but eventually I realised my ancestors weren’t chemically castrated, hung from trees, set on fire, forbidden from public spaces… and they actually had their own surnames.

“No you didn’t. You leaped on “people of colour” to intentionally marginalise Americans of African American descent.”

Nope. I “leaped on” her statement. You have yet to invalidate my counterpoint.

“Every time I see you *criticise others with your *logic skills, you do the very thing you claim your *opponent is doing.”

Nope. You have yet to prove that, either.

“There is genuinely something wrong with the way you think. I’m not just saying this because you’re an arsehole, I’m saying it because it’s glaringly obvious to everybody else but you and your lonely sycophantic followers.”

Now, that’s Well Poisoning. You fail to refute what I say, and attack my followers because of me. By the way, followers, anyone who follows both Ourben and I, Ourben just called all of my readers, including you, lonely and sycophantic. You follow him, why, exactly?

”* lulz”

My sentiment, exactly. Only regarding you.

“You didn’t say anything to disprove. You projected weird insecurities and ignorance.”

Uh, no. You have yet to refute what I said, in perfect security of thought, and now proceed to attack me. If anyone projects “weird insecurities and ignorance”, it’s you.

“You think black history month is racist because:

  • You’re not black.
  • Morgan Freeman.

That’s why you think black history month is racist. Isn’t it?”

Well, first, I’ll reiterate, you have yet to disprove anything I said, and now proceed to attack me. Second, to bullet 1, because not everyone is black, so it discriminates unnecessarily, according to race. Third, to bullet 2, he was right, and you’d not refute that, either, because you can’t.

“You think celebrating while black is racist. Yet you think telling black people what triumphs they can and cannot celebrate isn’t racist?”

Oh no. I think exceptionalizing being black is racist. There is no white history month, and neither is there a month for any other race but black people. I’m saying that it marginalizes other races, and you can’t refute that. You’re saying I’m wrong because I’m white, or maybe because I’m human, and you’re pissed that I’m calling you out.

“Hilarious, in a tragic sort of way…”

Nope. Logical. In a tragic sort of way.

“Black communities will decide when they are bored with black history month. LGBT communities will decide when they are bored with pride parades.”

And so will all of the public institutions that force us to join in.

“Not you.”

Prove it.

“I realise it’s hard to understand. I couldn’t understand it for years.”

Nope. Just illogical.

“…but eventually I realised my ancestors weren’t chemically castrated, hung from trees, set on fire, forbidden from public spaces… and they actually had their own surnames.”

None of that matters to the present. We should remember that, and use it as a reason to avoid the actions leading to it, but we should not use it as an excuse to be racially discriminatory.

Deal with it.

IIF

As a woman who’s aspiring to be a Mathematician, I’m really fucking offended by Women’s History Month. I’m not a victim- and I celebrate can and do celebrate my achievements without the assistance of some special snowflake holiday where men have to step aside and let me bask in some weridass “glory”. I actually feel a little bad for people who feel like they NEED a women’s/race based history month. Celebrate it your fucking self. You don’t need an audience to be awesome.

But, hey. Probably just white, male, ‘splanation. Prove me wrong.

So, women and people of color aren’t allowed to celebrate their achievements without the inclusion of the very people who are marginalizing them? Because, you know, White Male History is celebrated every single fucking day. I think women and people of color deserve more than just one lousy month, don’t you?

First, POC doesn’t equal black. If you go there, then where the fuck is Chinese history month? Egyptian? Mexican? Korean? Eskimo? Syrian? Libyan? Iraqi? Iranian? Afghan? How many months are there? Oh right. Black and white. There. There’s 12. Happy now? Or do you just want the months in principle?

Second, I have oppressed no one. Fuck that. Racially, my ancestors were even in Canada at the time of this marginalization you speak of! Don’t you think you’re making a bit of a mass conclusion about me because of my skin color? If you are, fuck you. My ancestors never owned slaves, or oppressed black people, and I resent the racist sentiment. Deal with me, not my melanin levels. And sexually, my family was Feminist in the era of womens’ mass right reclamation. So, no, not even there. Deal with me, not my testosterone levels.

And “White Male history” is not celebrated every day. Human history is. You can’t change what happened by altering concentration of “celebration,” you can only exclude based on these petty factors, which makes you no better than the society you claim to be angry at. Your comment attempts to invoke pity for the sake of righteousness. It won’t work with my blog. I’m unapologetic, because I don’t need to be apologetic. I’ve done nothing wrong to my multiracial brethren or the women of the world, so why the fuck am I marginalized, even for a month, by this society, upon which I have left no racial or sexual scars?

So, no. Nobody “deserves” a month. All that does is say, “Hey, racism, and sexism are fun! Join us in the festivities.” Additionally, go far enough back, and all ancestors are guilty of a bit of oppression, even you. So don’t even go there.

Next?
